However, it is more cost-effective to serve it at home than to eat it in a restaurant. But there&#8217;s no need to be intimidated about making prime rib at home. This cut comes from the same primal rib section of the cow that a&nbsp;rib-eye&nbsp;steak does. To be considered a&nbsp;rib-eye<a href=\"https:\/\/addapinch.com\/skillet-rib-eye-steaks-recipe\/\">&nbsp;steak<\/a>, the meat must be cut before the rib roast is cooked. Prime rib is a larger cut of meat that typically includes the bone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full-cut prime rib, comprised of seven ribs, will generally weigh from 16 to 18 pounds and feeds about fourteen guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-buy-nbsp-prime-rib\">How to Buy&nbsp;Prime Rib<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When buying prime rib from the grocery store, you\u2019ll want to ask the butcher for a standing rib roast and let them know how many people you will be serving. A quick way to determine the size you need to purchase is generally two servings per bone, depending on the thickness you plan to serve. Generally, a thicker cut is desired if serving as the main entree. If as part of a buffet, thinly carved pieces are usually fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I prefer to buy a bone-in prime rib or standing rib roast, as the bones serve as a natural rack for the meat when baking, insulate the meat while cooking, and make for a juicier, more tender prime rib when cooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask the butcher to prep the meat for you by cutting away the bones from the bottom of the meat. But do ask them to go ahead and tie the bones back onto the meat for you. This way, you have the benefit of cooking the beef with the bones for a tender prime rib while still being able to cut away the tied bones easily to make carving for serving easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Marbling Impacts the Taste and Grade of Prime Rib&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Marbling, or intramuscular fat, lends flavor and tenderness to beef. The more marbling, the more tender the cut of beef.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marbling also affects the grade of the beef. The grade of most prime rib available at grocers is USDA Choice Grade. This is the second-best grade with a large degree of marbling. USDA Prime Grade is the beef with the heaviest marbling. However, the prime grade is not common to find, sometimes requiring a special order, and is substantially more expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Roast the Perfect Prime Rib<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparation, a few simple ingredients, and attention to these tips and instructions will result in a prime rib roast that is perfectly cooked. And all of this is incredibly easy with this recipe! Here&#8217;s how to make it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ingredients <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bone<\/strong><strong>-In Prime&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Rib<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Ask the&nbsp;butcher for a standing rib roast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kosher Salt<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; Salt is important to prepare the beef to be its most tender.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pepper<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; You&#8217;ll use this for a beautiful pepper-crusted finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step-by-Step Instructions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prep for the Most Tender Prime Rib<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Salt<\/strong>. Besides the bones that make for a juicy prime rib, salt on the standing rib roast makes for the most tender meat. You&#8217;ll want to salt it about four to five days before you cook it. When left on the meat for an extended period (from about an hour to days), the salt seeps into the meat and provides for better seasoned, juicy meat. This is a\u00a0<strong>dry brining method<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If, for some reason, you can\u2019t salt it that far in advance, do so at least an hour before roasting. Anything shorter than an hour will work against you and result in a tougher exterior to your meat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wrap and Refrigerate<\/strong>. Once you\u2019ve salted the roast, wrap it tightly with plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator until an hour before cooking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Place on Roasting Pan<\/strong>. Remove your beef from the fridge an hour before cooking, then unwrap and place the bone side down on a roasting pan fitted with a roasting rack, allowing it to reach room temperature.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Season<\/strong>. At this point, add any additional seasonings you want to use. I like to serve it pepper-encrusted for extra flair, but you can use a blend of herbs in garlic butter for another amazing option. These optional seasonings are included below so you can use them based on your preference.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roast the Length of Time for Desired Doneness<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How much time you cook the beef depends on how well you prefer your roast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Preheat<\/strong>. Preheat your oven to 475\u00ba F for about 15 minutes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Roast<\/strong>. Then roast for 15 minutes and reduce to 325\u00ba until it reaches the desired internal temperature, usually about 11 \u2013 12 minutes per pound for rare prime rib, 12 \u2013 13 minutes for medium-rare prime rib, and 14 \u2013 15 minutes for medium well prime rib.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: You\u2019ll need to probe with an\u00a0<strong>internal meat thermometer<\/strong>\u00a0to ensure it\u2019s cooked to the desired temperature. You will also want to allow <span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>car<\/strong><\/span>ryover cooking, meaning you\u2019ll want to remove from the oven about 2-4 degrees less than the desired temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Allow Prime Rib to Roast until Internal Temperature Reaches Desired Doneness<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You will want to roast your prime rib until the meat thermometer registers the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>115\u00ba F \u2013 120\u00ba F for&nbsp;<strong>rare<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>125\u00ba F \u2013 130\u00ba F for&nbsp;<strong>medium rare<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>135\u00ba F \u2013 140\u00ba F for&nbsp;<strong>medium<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>145\u00ba F \u2013 150\u00ba F for&nbsp;<strong>medium well<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To roast your prime rib for medium rare, you will want to remove it from the oven when the temperature reaches 125\u00ba F and let it&nbsp;<strong>rest<\/strong>&nbsp;for about 20 to 30 minutes before slicing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Allow beef to&nbsp;<strong>rest<\/strong>&nbsp;for about 20 minutes. This allows for the most tender, juicy prime rib! Then, move to the carving board for slicing and serving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip<\/strong>: Use a\u00a0meat thermometer\u00a0to ensure the roast has reached the desired temperature. You will want to check various areas of the meat with the meat thermometer to ensure you have cooked it perfectly. The worst thing is overcooking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Serve at the Perfect Temperature<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For guests who prefer a more&nbsp;<strong>well-done<\/strong>&nbsp;slice of beef, I normally have a rimmed roasting pan standing by to place the beef on and return to the oven for a few minutes to cook it to their desired temperature. That way, everyone can have their prime rib as they prefer it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Storage Tips for Leftover Prime Rib<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have any leftover prime rib (and that\u2019s a major if!), you can easily save it for later serving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To refrigerate<\/strong>: Wrap well and store in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To freeze<\/strong>: Wrap well and store in an airtight freezer container for up to 6 months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To reheat<\/strong>: Allow frozen prime rib to thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Leftover prime rib is delicious cold, but if you desire to reheat it, do so carefully at a low oven temperature of 250 degrees with a bit of broth or au jus in the dish to preserve the tenderness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is amazing with<a href=\"https:\/\/addapinch.com\/three-ingredient-buttermilk-biscuit-recipe\/\">\u00a0easy buttermilk biscuits<\/a>\u00a0and a <a href=\"https:\/\/addapinch.com\/honey-mustard-dressing-recipe\/\">honey mustard\u00a0sauce<\/a> as an appetizer!
